When I was a child, I always wondered why everyone bowed their heads when they prayed. I mean, if God was up above, why did we look down?
It took me a good bit of time to understand. We bow out of reverence and respect, just like we would for a king. We close our eyes to focus ourselves on God and remove other distractions of this world. We clasp our hands together as if we were pleading with a high king.
Which, technically, we are. Since God is King of all creation, don’t we owe it to our Lord in a way to bow before God’s glory? It’s just another way to show God how much we respect and honor Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
I know, it sounds simple and I honestly don’t know how I didn’t think about it before, but we bow because God is God. It is as easy as that. Its no mombo-jumbo tradition that only certain Christians follow, as I once believed.
